Minsk… Grandparents…

July 2, 2010

This card from Minsk, Belarus, makes me think of my grandparents. Both of my fathers parents were born in Minsk. They came to America in the early 1900’s. It’s hard to know anything about their life in Minsk, before they came here. It’s even hard to know much about their early years here. They spoke some English, the sort of vocabulary you learn in first year language class. Enough to be good grandparents and make lunch for their grandchildren!

This card is “Zaslauye St. Virgin Mary church, Architectural Monument of 18th century”. Well, 18th century. Maybe my grandparents saw this church. Maybe they even went to church there! It has a small, peaceful, loveliness to it.

And it gives just a glimpse of a world from which I came.
