Barcelona La Pedrero

August 23, 2010

Hola Amigos!

This arrived from a postcrossing friend in Espana!

This is a UNESCO World Heritage site in Spain: La Pedrera, designed by Gaudi. Wikipedia explains that

Casa Milà, better known as La Pedrera (Catalan for ‘The Quarry’), is a building designed by the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí and built during the years 1905–1910, being considered officially completed in 1912. …Gaudi wanted the people who lived in the flats to all know each other therefore there were only lifts on every second floor so people had to communicate with one another on different floors.

Now THAT is an interesting way to force people into community. And must be a difficult building to move into and out of. Just rent a crane!

Wikipedia has beautiful pictures of some of the details of this building, such as the ventilation towers that look like strange droids from Star Wars.

This is a city I would like to visit!
